keyitaly.com Blog - The beauty of the Majella

I read from:
keyitaly.com Blog - The beauty of the Majella: "Gill Charlton discovers a landscape of serene beauty in the meadows, gorges and mountain villages of the Majella National Park. It is an easy hour’s drive from Pescara’s airport to the mountain village of Decontra along roads overhung with yellow broom. Here, in the Majella National Park, there is snow in the roadside ditches even though it is late spring."

Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy

Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy: "The Province of Chieti is mostly a hilly and mountainous area between the Adriatic sea to the east and the Maiella chain to the north-west. It is extensively cultivated with olive trees and vineyards, and produces celebrated wines and extravirgine olive oil. The province of Chieti was called 'Citeriore' since it was situated to the right of the Pescara river and was in Latin 'citra' (=this side) with reference to Naples, the capital of the Kingdom. The Pescara river separated it from the province of Teramo, the Apennine Mountains from the province of L'Aquila, the right shore of the Sangro and the Valicella of the Varrino from Molise. The territory includes mountainous features, the group of the Maiella, and 72 km of steep and rocky coast, along the Adriatic sea."

Sweet Italy Estates - The biggest address in Italian Properties

"Birdwatching, Oak and holm groves in Torino di Sangro"

If you are looking for a green area, a place to breath pure oxygen, a place for bird watching in Abruzzo, we suggest to visit the Holm and oak grove in Torino di Sangro. Just head north on the SS 16 towards Pescara from Vasto and you hit it on the left hand side. There are tons of signs where you can discover all the variety of birds available, trees and other interesting notions. Following the directions on the Statale 16 Adriatica road, we can discover a peculiar combination: in the same direction, there are a natural reserve, the Holm-oak grove of Torino di Sangro, and an English military cemetery . Following the winding road, we will find several fences defining the natural paths and the hiking paths that can be covered on foot, mountain bike or horse. In the Visitors’ Centre, the operators explain that we are in a coastal biotope protected since 1979, and regional reserve since 2001, that is included in the larger perimeter of a site that has a community interest. From mount Conero to the Gargano there is no other coastal area with the same naturalistic value: 175 hectares of mixed wood with a prevalence of four kilometres of luxuriant Mediterranean scrub – from the sea level to about 115 metres above sea level – and creates a unique example of environment with the large riparian areas of the Sangro and two other green lungs of the valley, the Forest of Mozzagrogna and the Regional Reserve of the Lake Serranella . Even in the picnic area, the silence is broken only by the song of the many colourful birds such as the bee-eater and the red woodpecker, or by the typical rhythm of the tortoises during the mating season. Bird watching in Abruzzo is possible in this area. The scientific interest is focused on the population of tortoises, the largest in the northern-central part of the Adriatic sea. There is also a faunal area dedicated to these reptiles, chosen as a symbol of the reserve.

Excursions and trekking typical product of Abruzzo

Excursions and trekking typical product of Abruzzo: "The activities of De-gusti-bus programmes are dedicated to those who lnjoy t enjoy the gastronomic specialties of the places we find, but are not keen on walking.
For them we thought of a series of very particular offers, which leave untouched the beauty and the fun of the discovery of places and flavors: routes to cover comfortably by bus, to taste handmade products and visit wonderful places, such as the medieval villages of Scanno or Pescocostanzo, Romanic and Baroque churches, art towns like Sulmona and L'Aquila, Archeological sites like Alba Fucens or Corfinium, religious places like the Majella hermitages. For those who are interested, short easy excursions are possible, in the places considered symbols of the environmental protection, such as the Camosciara Integral Reserve, the first nucleus of the first Italian Park, the Fondillo Valley, or the gorgeous beechwoods in Pescasseroli.

Excursions and trekking typical product of Abruzzo

Excursions and trekking typical product of Abruzzo: "The Green Taste proposals are hiking tours in different levels of difficulty that will take you to discover walking the multiple aspects of our Region. We will start off with the Abruzzo National Park, the first created in Italy, in 1922, still today a place where it is possible to get in touch with unspoilt and sometimes wild nature; we will walk its valleys and woods, where it is not hard to spot deer, roes, boars, and in the luckiest cases, to watch the famous Apennine wolf or the pacific Marsican Brown Bear, living symbol of the co-existence between men and wild animals. We will face then the peaks of the Italian Gran Sasso, among which there is the highest summit in the Apennins, the Big Horn, with 2912 meters of altitude. We will gaze at the majesty of the Massiccio della Majella, and we will be enchanted by its fascinating landscapes and the spirituality of its hermitages: or again, by the startling panoramas in the Silente Velino Park, a small piece of Dolomites in the Italian Central Apennines.
