Abruzzo: nature, parks and protected areas.

Safeguarding the territory: a real commitment for Abruzzo

In this respect, Parks are not just useless fenced-off areas, but material proof that a community has acknowledged the intrinsic, inalienable worth of a territory. At the present time, abruzzo is heading a most complex and ambitious project: APE (Apennine Park of Europe)which will protect nature and promote sustainable development in line with European Union directives.

The three national parks (the historic Abruzzo National Park, and the more recent Gran Sasso-Laga Mountains and Majella Nation Parks), and Sirente-Velino Regional Park, as well more than 30 Nature Reservs and Oases, managed directly by the municipalities, by the State Forestry Service, or in collaboration with environmentalist associations, make Abruzzo the Region of Parks, with About 30% of its territory under protection.

The lushness and wide variety of the natural landscapes make Abruzzo a haven of ecological and environmental values. The particular morphology of inland areas, the gentle subcoastal hills and the marine environments have created exceptionally powerful habitats. Noble, rugged Gran Sasso, with its limestone, dominates the Appenines; just beneath the north face of Corno Grande we find the Calderone glacier; unique on the Apennines and furthest in all Europe. South of the massif there is the endless Campo Imperatore, at 1800m in altitude. the Laga Mountains, with their springs, rivers and forests.

Abruzzo...a region to discover!

Abruzzo is a region skilled in preservation: there is no better way to sum up the spirit and nature of this Region. Discovering its extraordinary lanscapes, strolling through its historic, stately towns and ancient hilltop villages, the immediate impact is of a Region that has succesfully preserved many of its original characteristics, and where the untouched environment and human settlement of the past constitute an extraordinary and truly suceessful combination.

Abruzzo's magic is also, and above all, in the finely-tuned equilibrium between nature, still dominating the landscape, and the stratified presence of humanity: which creates the theory of small villages dotted across the territory, the architectural might of churches, castles, mansions, priceless works of art, countless expressions of artistic crafts, and the age-old rural and pastoral traditions.

For the wise and enthusiastic visitor, the door opens to the exploration of Abruzzese territory, in the quest to find the typical traits that make this Region, in many ways, so unique!
